Telenet Cloud Online Help

What is cloud computing?

In case of cloud computing , computer capacity and applications are used through the internet. The location of the servers providing the services doesn’t matter. Hostbasket takes care of the management of these services and you have online access. In order to have an optimal infrastructure we use virtualization technology.

The Hostbasket cloud infrastructure has been built so that customers can compose and use their own virtual servers. Every customer is given a certain amount of the available server, storage and network capacity. Through the intelligent Microsoft System Center Suite the cloud infrastructure determines where to install the customer’s virtual server on a physical server, based on the available capacity.

The complete cloud infrastructure is monitored and managed by this System Center software. Virtual servers will be migrated to other hardware without interrupting applications. This way maintenance activities can be easily done and server problems can be resolved without interrupting applications.

The Cloud

Cloud computing refers to the internet. The internet is symbolized by a cloud in diagrams which explains the name “cloud”.

Advantages of cloud computing

The most important advantage of cloud computing is its flexibility and continuity. The capacity of “The Cloud” is almost unlimited. This way extra resources can be immediately assigned to the cloud server and new cloud servers can be automatically set up and use the available capacity. The Cloud itself takes care of the management of the available capacity and use of the resources.

“The cloud” is also the perfect solution for continuity. “The cloud” will constantly monitor all hardware. In case of any failure or unavailability of a hardware machine the servers will be automatically migrated to other hardware. This way server applications will be available almost all the time.

This can be realized because the software and hardware are separated by a virtualization layer which makes the software independent of the underlying server hardware.

Private clouds versus Public clouds

The difference between a private cloud and a public cloud is simple. In case of a public cloud the cloud infrastructure is used by various companies, in case of a private cloud the cloud infrastructure is set up for one company.

In case of public clouds you only pay for the resources and services you really use. Users can easily up- and downgrade or set up new servers. They don’t need to invest in hardware. The public cloud provider makes sure there is enough capacity in the cloud.

This is a perfect solution for :

  • Growing and dynamic companies that like to take advantage of the opportunities created by changing needs
  • Temporary projects
  • Companies that hire seasonal workers or have changing needs (e.g. month-end closing activities, marketing campaigns...)
  • Situations requiring a quick server setup or extra computing power

In case of a private cloud, the cloud is not shared outside the company. Hardware is reserved for one company only. When extra capacity is needed extra hardware (a node) will be added to the pool.

A private cloud is useful for bigger companies or companies with lots of servers or in case of any specific security measures that public clouds cannot offer.
