What can I do when my domain name is already registered?

Domain registrations are executed on a first-come first-served basis and anybody can register any domain name.
Even though the registration of a domain name can be restricted in some ways, it is perfectly possible that somebody else has registered your company name or brand name in order to prevent you from registering it or to sell it to you for an astronomical price. Claiming such a "high jacked" domain name is most often a very expensive pursuit that doesn’t always have a desired result.
