Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a standard that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voiceband modem can provide. Therefore this is also called broadband technology. ADSL establishes a broadband connection between two telephone connections. In case of ADSL the speed at which you receive data (downstream) is higher than the speed at which you send data (upstream) thus explaining the use of the word Asymmetric. To send and receive data at the same speed you need SDSL technology (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line).
